Come to the 16th annual Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Garden and get a whiff of the spring that is about to arrive. Belgian floral artist Daniel Ost is the Orchid Show designer. His amazing sculptures and displays interpret the stunning flowers in original, thoughtful ways.

There will be almost endless opportunities to snap photographs gorgeous enough to induce envy in friends and family. For those interested in getting into the orchid-growing action, there are orchids for sale and experts on hand to explain how to grow your own.

To top off what is already a fantastic day of flower adoration, on certain evenings cocktails are served; Thai dance and live music will be performed.

The show is already in full force but continues to run through to Sunday April 22, 2018. It is hosted at the New York Botanical Garden at 2900 Southern Boulevard in the Bronx, inside the Enid A. Haupt Observatory. Tickets cost $23 on weekdays and $28 on weekends.
On March 25 food trucks will be celebrating their own special day. The Grand Bazaar is partnering with the New York Food Truck Association to create a food truck experience that will be long remembered.
The list of who’s going to show off their wares has not yet been revealed, but we can anticipate the participation of at least 12 trucks added to the market’s usual 100+ vendors. Even more fun is the fact that all the proceeds are going to be donated to four public schools in the neighborhood.
It is free of charge, but donations are encouraged at the door, or in advance at this link.
Head down to “Sleep No More,” an amazing experience in which all the participants wear masks and wander through the rooms of the hotel, encountering actors along the way. The audience, which is now just you, watch scenes up close and at their own pace, and interact with the actors. Chances are high that you will be separated from whomever you came to the show with, but that’s OK. The experience is meant to be for individuals, and you will reunite your friend/relative by the time the show is over.

The unique presentation tells the story of Shakespeare’s Scottish tragedy Macbeth through a film noir lens. Sleep No More won the 2011 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience and won Punchdrunk special citations at the 2011 Obie Awards for design and choreography.

This is what reviewers had to say about the experience:

"Wickedly wonderful. A unique evening that engages all the senses. A brilliant production! Transformative. An unusually enlightening evening of entertainment.” --Thom Geier, Entertainment Weekly

"One of the most entertaining and involving works of theater you're likely to see! If you have any sense of adventure, this is theater you don't want to miss."--Huffington Post

"A merry macabre chase. A voyeur’s delight. Messes with your head as thoroughly as any artificial stimulant. Spectacular!"--Ben Brantley, The New York Times

“Thrilling, mind-bending! Unlike anything you’ve ever seen.” --Elisabeth Vincentelli, New York Post
James Creekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16509173127790040209noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2129630118191439555.post-35293607381740019612018-01-21T03:10:00.000-08:002018-01-25T03:16:08.547-08:00A Long Week of Great Winter Eating is Upon Us<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

It is in many ways a non-conventional space for many non-traditional visual and performing artists. This non-conventionality has been going on since 2007, and in 2011 the New York Times noted about the Armory that, “Park Avenue Armory…has arrived as the most important new cultural institution in New York City.”

The Armory has a long and unique history. It was built as a location for the well-heeled Seventh Regiment of the National Guard, the original volunteer fighting force which responded to President Abraham Lincoln’s outcry for soldiers in 1861. The building served both functions of social club and military facility. Designed by the leading artists and interior designers of the day, the Armory’s central 55,000 square-foot drill hall is one of the largest open spaces of its kind in New York City today. It was a marvel of engineering technology, designed by Regiment veteran and architect Charles W. Clinton who later went on to design the Apthorp Apartments and the Astor Hotel, which was later torn down.

Guided tours of the Armory are available at a variety of times, and can also be arranged for groups.
Coming events include:

Yerma: March 23-April 21, an updated play based on the 1934 drama by Federico Garcia Lorca.

Myriad: May 22-24, “Oneohtrix Point Never's myRiad is a hyperstitial “concertscape” imagined from the perspective of an alien intelligence that explores disorienting relationships between space and sound and mutates forms of live musical performance.”

The Let Go: June 7-July 1, is a dance-based town hall commissioned by the Armory. Nick Cave, the creator, will present a hybrid installation, performance, gathering and dancing environment.

And that is just a sample. For more performances check the Armory’s website.

James Creekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16509173127790040209noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2129630118191439555.post-27964349988420203522017-12-13T03:40:00.001-08:002017-12-13T03:40:25.201-08:00One of New York’s Newest Architectural Wonders: The Oculus

there are plenty of ways New York and its inhabitants are commemorating the

I am talking about the glorious Grand Central Terminal, an amazing place that tens of thousands of people pass through each and every day, but don’t really see. And that is a pity, because this place is spectacular.

Located in midtown Manhattan at 42nd Street and Park Avenue, the massive structure takes up two entire city blocks. It is the meeting point for the New York City subway system and the Metro-North Railroad which takes travelers to Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties in New York, and beyond. There are 44 platforms at the station, more than any other railway station in the world. All the tracks are below ground, with 30 tracks on the upper level and 26 more on the lower, but only 43 of the total are in use for passengers.

One of the most recognizable of GCT icons is the four-faced brass clock perched atop the information booth. It was designed by Henry Edward Bedford and cast in Waterbury, Connecticut. The clock faces are made of opalescent glass, also known as opal glass or milk glass. Although it is quite beautiful, it is different than the semi-precious stone known as opal.

The ceiling was conceived in 1912, a year before the terminal opened in 1913, by architect Whitney Warren, with his friend French portrait artist Paul César Helleu, The ceiling is a portrayal of the night sky full of stars and is supposed to be an accurate depiction of the heavens, but is inaccurate, but in a complex way. Although Orion is correctly portrayed, the constellations of Gemini and Taurus are reversed both internally and in their relation to Orion. The mistake was noted almost immediately by a commuter back in 1913, but the mistake has never been corrected throughout the many renovations the ceiling has been subjected to.

There is shopping and a food hall in the station, as well as a model train exhibit at the Terminal’s transit museum. Visitors can have a free self-guided tour or even a docent led tour. Go to the ticket window labeled “GCT Tours on the Main Concourse, and have a great, or even a grand visit to this unique New York destination.
Senior wellness, rehabilitation and housing are rising
sectors throughout the United States. In NYC alone, the senior population is expected
to increase by 400,000 over the next 13 years, reaching 1.93 million. Homes,
rehabilitation centers and other facilities for the elderly, such as Dry Harbor Nursing Home, work to provide their seniors with the healthcare, attention and
activities they need to ensure continuous quality of life, and now New York

this goal: employment.

One of my favorite places smack dab in midtown are the Channel Gardens at Rockefeller Center. What is especially lovely about the gardens is that the flowers and shrubs on display are constantly changing with the seasons. In the early spring you can expect to see gorgeous blankets of tulips blooming, while in the fall there might be a weeping willow forest to greet you.

The gardens are found among the 14 commercial buildings found on the west side of Fifth Avenue, in the middle of the 200-foot plaza promenade. The beautiful gardens surround six granite pools of water, each adorned with a bronze-cast fountainhead sculptures. The sculptures are of mythological creatures, designed by renowned sculptor Rene Paul Chambellan.

The sunken plaza is watched over by the bronze gilded sculpture of Prometheus, by Paul Manship. At the foot of the plaza at Fifth Avenue is Atlas, by Lee Lawrie.

If you can come visit now, be sure to take note of the tropical 8-foot-high custom dragonfly floating above the bromeliads. In winter, around the time of the holidays, you will sparkling bands of red ribbons encircling the green shrubs connecting the lovely holiday angels, which were designed in 1954 by Valerie Clarebout.

Anytime you come is the right time. Don’t miss this extraordinary New York experience.
New York is full of surprises. Here’s something new that sounds like a fantastic way to spend a wonderful New York evening: Rooftop Cinema Club.

Just imagine a typical hot, sticky New York summer day. Your work day is over, and you just need to relax, but not more indoor recreation with stuffy artificial air conditioning and more of those burdensome four walls enclosing you. No, you want the great outdoors, the cool breezes off the river, the amazing site of New York’s incredible skyscrapers, and a great movie to relax your mind.
Sounds good, right? Well this is what Rooftop Cinema is all about. At their two great locations in Williamsburg and Midtown Manhattan you climb to the roof, settle down in a deck chair with some popcorn, bubbles and in in the case of the Midtown location, a lovely mixed drink, and watch the sunset and then a great movie. Purchase the “Rooftop Love Seat” ticket and you get a double deck chair, unlimited popcorn and bubbles, so bring someone you like along.

What movies are on the program for this summer? Here’s a partial list:

• Vertigo
• Hidden Figures
• Lion
• American Psycho
• Moonlight
• Raider of the Lost Ark
• Top Gun
• The Big Lebowski

And that’s just in June!

• Midtown Manhattan: YOTEL (570 Tenth Avenue)
• Brooklyn: East Williamsburg’s OfficeOps (57 Thames Street)James Creekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16509173127790040209noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2129630118191439555.post-69354328723453580822017-05-01T02:45:00.000-07:002017-05-01T02:45:09.808-07:00Magnetic New York: A Guide to the Greatest City in the WorldIn case you have been living on a deserted island for the past, let’s say, 40 years, you know that New York has been getting better in every category that makes a city great, despite many apparent setbacks along the way. More people want to live here than ever before; crime is at historic lows; the art and fashion worlds are booming here; movies and TV shows are being made here again; the foodie culture is rejoicing as restaurants are popping up in parts of town that no sane person would have even visited 25 years ago; and I’m sure we can list much more.
This wondrous transformation is easier to see from the outside. New Yorkers are born with a deeply ingrained cynicism which can often make it hard to see the good that is all around them. Well, here is a book for them. Magnetic City: A Walking Companion to New York, by Justin Davidson, reveals the city’s current state in the greater context of its history and eternal cycles of decay, change, and renewal.

The book takes eight different areas: the Financial District, the Seaport and the Brooklyn waterfront, the World Trade Center, West Chelsea and the High Line, 42nd Street, the Upper West Side, upper Manhattan’s Sugar Hill and the South Bronx; and uses these to show New York’s remarkable ability to be reborn after decades of either crisis, catastrophe or simple irrelevance.

Davidson discusses the shocking comeback New York made after such unprecedented events as the September 11 attacks; Hurricane Sandy; the financial disaster of 2008; and other crazily significant events that did not destroy, but rather made New York better.

For anyone who loves New York City, this is a book that will validate and strengthen that love, and you’ll learn plenty along the way.
The Strangest Gravestone in Trinity Church: From 1846 when
it was built, until 1890, Trinity Church was the tallest building in New York.
Reaching to a height of 280 feet, it was finally overtaken after over 40 years
by the New York World Building. The church is built adjacent to New York’s oldest
graveyard, containing the oldest carved gravestone, that of Richard Churcher.
The five-year-old died in 1681. Not far from Churcher is the city’s strangest
gravestone, that of James Leeson. He was an innkeeper and mason, and died in 1794.
His stone is carved with mysterious symbols across the top. It was many years
before anyone could figure out what those weird markings symbolized until someone
finally understood that the markings were written in obscure masonic “pigpen”
cypher. The mystery was solved and the inscription simply reads, “REMEMBER
DEATH.”

The 1930s were a tough time for society. In the aftermath of the devastation called World War I, the economic disaster known as the depression, and the geopolitical turmoil shaking the planet, it is no wonder that many artists were part of the movement to find a solution within the communist revolution.

Some of the best known of these communist supporting artists were Alice Neel, Stuart Davis and Ben Shahn. These artists, and others, often created art in the service of the cause of communism and the Communist Party, USA.

The ideology of communism preached that art needed to be freed from its formalist “bourgeois decadence.” Nevertheless, as a codeword for cubism, “formalism” still found its way into the work of these artists, in particular, Neel and Davis. These artists never completely sacrificed their artistic intelligence on the altar of political didacticism. To a lesser extent this was also true of their fellow artists, who are much less known.

The works of about twenty of these artists are now on display, including Neel, Davis and Shahn, at a new exhibition entitled “You Say You Want a Revolution: American Artists and the Communist Party,” at the Galerie St. Etienne, which takes a little explored look at this troubled time in history.

The Galerie St. Etienne is located at 24 West 57th Street. Entrance is free. 11am-5pm every Tuesday-Saturday until February 11, 2017.
James Creekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16509173127790040209noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2129630118191439555.post-63363071596360433262016-10-09T02:30:00.000-07:002016-10-13T03:20:26.025-07:00Phoenix Ancient Art Bringing the Pantheon to the Armory for TEFAF New York Fall 2016Teaming up with the Dutch expert stand-builder Stabilo, Phoenix Ancient Art will be presenting its exquisite collection of antiquities at the TEFAF New York Fall 2016 show within a re-creation of the great Pantheon of Rome.

The unique Phoenix Pantheon booth will be appearing at the Park Avenue Armory for the TEFAF show from October 22-26, and will include a vaulted dome ceiling and a central oculus which will light up the space. Phoenix’s Pantheon is not only meant to display the great art which the antiquities dealer is showcasing, but to bring to mind Hadrian, the great Roman Emperor, who was noted not only as emperor, but also as a patron of the arts and as an architect in his own right.

Co-founder of Phoenix Ancient Art Hicham Aboutaam explained his own admiration and fascination with the Pantheon.

“I never miss an opportunity to visit and experience the Pantheon whenever I am in Rome,” he said.

“The inspiration of this domed temple, a unique masterwork of architecture, lies not only in its perfect form and unparalleled preservation, but also in the embodiment of the spirit of the Classical world seen in all of its ancient glory -- all the more remarkable as it is still visible in our own time.”

Phoenix is creating their booth version of the Pantheon as the perfect display case for the ancient artwork from their collection which were inspired by the Pantheon in Rome.

Hadrian was an admirer of Greek culture, which the Roman Empire engulfed and incorporated into its own culture approximately 2,000 plus years ago. His favorite artwork was Roman pieces which were inspired by the great Greek works of the Classical Period. Hadrian’s tastes influenced a style which came to be known later as Hadrianic Classicism.
Using modern technology, a 1,800 year-old Roman arch destroyed by Isis last year made a triumphant re-appearance in the heart of New York City’s financial district.

In May 2015, after the extremist terrorist organization ISIS captured the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra, they began a campaign of destruction, including destroying precious ancient artefacts and murder. In August 2015 ISIS beheaded the famous antiquities scholar of Palmyra, Khaled al-Asaad, after he refused to tell his captors where valuable artefacts from the city were moved to for safe-keeping.

In October of 2015 the extremists blew up Palmyra’s Arch of Triumph, but that did not stop some from fighting back in an extraordinary way. A team of archaeologists from Oxford University’s Institute for Digital archaeology (IDA) was determined to recreate the arch.

Using photographs of the original arch, the reproduction is two-thirds the original size and was built from Egyptian marble using 3D technology.

Before its arrival in front of New York’s City Hall, the 11-tonne arch was first on display at London’s Trafalgar Square last April. It is scheduled to move to Dubai after spending one proud week in New York.

With its close proximity in space to the World Trade Center Memorial, and in time to the recent Chelsea bombing which injured 29 people, the arch is certainly a symbol of man’s triumph over evil.

“It is our hope that the arch, itself an icon of destruction and rebirth, will remind visitors of both the universality of suffering and the indomitable human capacity to rebuild what has been lost,” said the Executive Director of the IDA, Roger Michael.

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you should rush down to Tannen’s Magic Shop, the oldest magic store in New York City.

And just how old is old, you might ask? Well, it’s not quite as old as the city itself, but still, how many shops do you know of that will be having their 100th birthday in a mere ten years? That’s what I thought.
In its new location in Herald Square, a visit to this shop is a study in mind-bending beauty. The products are many and varied, such as invisible paint, “pure smoke,” multiplying billiard balls, and lots, lots more. For your convenience they are organized into intriguing categories, such as: cigarette magic, coin magic, dove magic, knife magic, and onward.

The shop has served the needs of every famous, and not so famous, New York magician for these past 90 years. You can count on the proprietors of Tannen’s to show you what you need to know about each trick- but only if you are a real, or at least in-training magician.

Want to learn the “tricks of the trade?” Tannen’s can arrange that via magic camp and classes. Located just down the hall from the Flosso-Hornman-Martinka store, where the great Harry Houdini used to reside as president, just a visit to Tannen’s will make you feel magical.
James Creekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16509173127790040209noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2129630118191439555.post-19239598659087023562016-06-23T03:58:00.000-07:002016-06-23T03:58:00.518-07:00Explore the Secret New YorkIn a city of millions there are some off-the-beaten-track attractions to inflame the imagination. Here is a quite short list of some of the more fascinating, less known places worth visiting around New York.

Mmuseumm

This is barely big enough to be called a room, let alone a museum. Nevertheless, consider a visit to this freight elevator turned display case which houses the “overlooked, dismissed, or ignored” items of the world. Created by filmmakers Alex Kalman and Benny and Josh Safdie, and sponsored by Kate, Andy, and Bea Spade, the space, which can hold three bodies at a time, holds rotating and permanent collections. Expect to see such oddities as the shoe that was thrown at George W. Bush at the Minister’s Palace in Baghdad; a hot water coil heater from Kaunus in Lithuania, and a plastic glove from Paradise Valley in Montana.

The National Museum of Mathematics
(MoMath), at 11 East 26th Street between Fifth and Madison Avenues,
across from Madison Square Park in the NoMad neighborhood of Manhattan,
New York City, was chartered in 2009 and opened its doors in 2012. It is
the only museum in North America dedicated solely to mathematics. Photo by Beyond My Ken.

Dream House

In 1993 modern composer La Monte Young created this work in collaboration with visual artist Marian Zazeela as the end result of 40 years of work together. (They are also married to each other.) You enter the Dream House through a black door on Church Street in Tribeca where you will experience constantly changing soundwaves accompanied by neon pink light reflections. Zazeela explains: “together, the sound and light can be experienced as a new form, or new media: the sound and light environment. The experience of the two mediums together as one requires a new, or at least different, mode of attention.”

Museum of Mathematics

Also known as MoMath, this museum is unique as it deals with a subject most people just talk about, but never really see. Opened in 2012 after the Long Island Goudreau Museum of Mathematics shut its doors, the goal is to give people a sensory experience of what mathematical abstractions might look like or behave like in the real world. The museum will open your eyes as to how math shapes our everyday lives, including architecture, technology and art.
According to experts, including the professionals at New York accounting firm Anchin Block & Anchin, many people, perhaps most, do not take all the deductions that they are entitled to.

About two-thirds of all taxpayers do get a refund from the IRS, yet, that check could be bigger if some of the following easy-to-miss deductions are not taken.

Did you get a new job, and did it require you to relocate? If so, you may be entitled to a deduction. Here’s how it works: If you needed to move over 50 miles for your new job, you can get a deduction for the moving expenses, including the gasoline and moving van. Richard Baum of Anchin Block & Anchin says that even if you are just starting your career this rule applies.

“Moving expenses for someone’s first job are deductible,” says Anchin CPA and partner Baum.

Anchin experts also point to the Earned Income Credit. This credit is huge, but only about 20 percent of eligible taxpayers take it. It is for low to moderate income earners, but many of these families don’t realize that their income falls underneath the qualifying limit. In 2015 families with three children could earn up to $53,267 and claim the credit, while single parents with one child can earn up to $39,131 and claim the credit. Even better, the earned income credit is a refundable credit, meaning that you can get those big tax credit amounts even if you have no tax liability.
